Together We Build
The Lutheran Training Institute (LTI) began as a training school for students who wanted to become teachers, evangelists, and nurses after completing grade 8 which was the highest level of education during that era in Liberia before 1960.
The first principal, Rev. Martin Reccius along with others on his staff thought it was necessary to combine two schools into one. The Muhlenberg Boys’ school at Millsburg and the Emma V. Day Girls’ school at Harrisburg were combined and named the Lutheran Training Institute (LTI).
LTI produced its first graduating class in 1950. In 1951, LTI was moved to its current location in Salayea, Lofa County, Liberia.
LTI was destroyed in the civil war in Liberia. Today, it operates as a day and vocational school. There have been some discussions about turning LTI into a junior college.
It is with this rich history and backdrop that alumni who are fortunate decided to come together to form the Lutheran Training Institute Students Association of America (LUTISAA). We have been LTI’s staunchest supporters ever since, leading efforts to grow the school, extend its reach, and provide educational opportunities for the best and brightest students.
Today, our organization is stronger and more vibrant than ever. It is our job to keep all LTI students and alumni connected and the school we all love through live events, reunions, virtual meetings, scholarship programs, capital campaigns, and fun programs.
